Cougar Golf Classic featured 23 teams

                The annual WNCC Cougar Golf Classic was a success on Saturday at Monument Shadows Golf Course with 23 teams taking part in the fun 4-person scramble.

                The 23 teams entered was the first time 20 teams were in the field since 2013 and the competition was fierce. The tournament helps raise funds for the WNCC athletic scholarships.

                This year’s men’s division was a battle with the team of David Rupp, Austin Dillon , Zzyzx Brown, and Dustin Bruckner captured the men’s division championship with a handicapped score of 52.5. The foursome had a total gross score of 58 over 18 holes.

                Second place in the men’s division went to the Ebony and Ivories team of Seth Englehaupt, Robert Carrizales, Adam Leavenworth, and Jeremy Frueh with a 54.1 handicapped score while third place went to the Strokes of Luck team of Christopher Gassling, Myles Milles, Sergio Airada, and Fidel Aguilar with a handicapped score of 55.5, just edging the fourth place team of Bob Hessler, Armand C astaneda, Ryna Burgner, and Gregg Sell, who had a 56.6 handicapped score.

                The COED winner were the Sterling Four made up of Todd Book, Jess Book, Drew Book, and Josh Dorcey with a handicapped score of 50.8 followed by the second-place team of Hampton Inn with Jerry Gealy, Amanda Gealy, Clarence Gealy, and Jeff Ross with a handicapped score of 54.1.

Third place in the COED division went to Runza with team members Brooke Samuelson, Chris Samuelson, Sierra Ostdiek, and Adam Ostidek with a 56.2 score. Fourth place with to the Tacos Mexico team of Mike Jones, Jack Jones, Luke Jones and Alex Jones with a 57 handicapped score.

                Each of the first-place teams received a $400 Monument Shadows gift certificate. Second and third place overall places were drawn from all the teams except the two winning teams. Second went to the Fore! Amigos made up of Emilee Pilkington, Dan Lackard, Nate Faulkner, and Josh Pilkington. Third place with to the JACS team of Anthony Solorzano, Cody Van Noy, Steve Van Noy, and Justin Pierson.

                The tournament also featured hole prizes. Rebecca Rahmig won the longest putt on hole 2; Garrett Freeman won longest drive by a man on hole 4; while Jerry Gealy won the closest to the pin in two shots on hole 5.

                Zandra Pullen won two hole prizes as she captured the shortest drive used by a women on hole 8 and then won the longest drive by a women on hole 10.  The closest to the sand on hole 12 went to Bob Hessler while Bob Bennett won the closest to the pin on hole 13. The shortest drive used by a man on hole 15 was won by Trevor Teichroeb.

The WESTCO Zephyrs received strong pitching performances from Blake Grasmick and Thatcher Thomalla in taking a doubleheader from the Bridgeport Bombers Sunday at Cleveland Field.

                In the opener, Grasmick went six strong innings and the Zephyrs opened a tight game with seven runs in the sixth inning in claiming the 10-2 win.

                Game two saw Thatcher toss a one-hitter as the Zephyrs erupted for seven second-inning runs in posting that 12-1 win.

                The first game was actually a close contest until the sixth inning when WESTCO scored their seven runs with the majority of them coming with two outs. Up until then, it was a 3-2 contest as both teams making key defensive plays.

                Bridgeport struck first in their first at-bat when Nick Weibert singled followed by a Holden Schultz walk. Both scored on a Kaden Schultz single for the 2-0 lead.

                WESTCO answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Mical Villagrana started things with a single and scored on a Carter Reisig sacrifice fly. Traven Jackson, who earned a walk, scored on a Ryan Hinman triple to tie the game.

                WESTCO took a 3-2 lead in the second when Dawson Barrett was hit by a pitch and scored on a throwing error after stealing third for the lead.

                Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth. Barrett started the inning with a one-out single and scored on a Thatcher Thomalla triple. Thomalla scored on a groundout to make it 5-2.

                With two outs, Oscar Feliz walked and scored on a Villagrana single. Villagrana came in to score on a Reisig single and Reisig scored on a Jackson single for the 8-2 lead. Hinman doubled in Jackson for the 9-2 lead and Hinman scored the game-ending run scoring on a passed ball.

                WESTCO out-hit Bridgeport 10-2. Mical Villagrana had three hits, all singles, with two runs scored and a RBI. Ryan Hinman had two hits with a double and triple with two RBIs and a run scored. Thomalla had two hits with a triple and RBI and run scored. Trevan Jackson had two runs scored while Carter Reisig had two RBIs.

                Bridgeport had three hits led by singles from Weibert, Holden Schultz, and Kaden Schultz. Kaden Schultz also had two RBIs in the game.

                Grasmick went six innings in allowing three hits and two runs while striking out six.

                The second game saw WESTCO continue where they left off from the first game as they scored 12 runs in the first three innings on just four hits.

                The Zephyrs plated one in the first as Villagrana walked and scored on a wild pitch.

                WESTCO added seven in the second to take an 8-0 lead. The second frame started with back-to-back walks from George Schmall and Adan Vargas. Caleb Burda scored both runs with a double. Burda came in to score on a Villagrana single for the 5-0 lead.

                Bridgeport came back with a run in the third as Trey Wright and Weibert each was hit by a pitch. Weibert stole second and on the steal, Wright came in to score.

                WESTCO came right back to score four runs in the bottom of the third. Burda was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch. Schmall also had a run-scoring single in the inning to make it 12-1.

                The Zephyrs had four hits in the contest as Burda had the only extra base hit with a double. Eric Sabala, Mical Villagrana and Samuel Bowlin all had a single. Villagrana scored three times with two RBIs, while Burda, Bowlin, and Hinman all had two runs scored for WESTCO.

                Bridgeport’s only hit came from Holden Schultz.

                Thatcher went five innings while striking out four and walking three in the win.

                WESTCO will be back in action Tuesday when they host North Platte in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at Cleveland Field.

                Bridgeport will be back in action when they host Gering Platte Valley Companies Tuesday night.
