The Scottsbluff volleyball team earned their fourth straight win and third straight sweep as the Bearcats made senior night special for the four seniors with the 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 win over Chadron Thursday at Scottsbluff.

Ava Reed, one of the four seniors recognized before the game along with Addy Bowlin, Alainah Salas, and Heidi Groskopf, said they played well against a talented Chadron team.

“Tonight, I thought we played pretty scrappy. They are a great team and, even without their full squad tonight, they did a really good job showing up and I think that we responded well.”

It was a very competitive match as no one had more than a 4-point lead throughout the night. Reed said they talk all the time about winning those close sets.

“We kind of talk all the time about how winning is a skill and I think that we’re kind of figuring that out a little bit of how to finish those close sets,” she said.

For the seniors, while it was senior night, they still have a couple more home matches. Reed, who had a kill in the third to make it 24-19 and then she served the final point for the win, said it was emotional at the start, but they knew how to focus at the right time.

“Honestly, before the game it was kind of emotional, but we had to figure out how to lock in right at the beginning of the game,” she said. “We still have a couple of games left on our home court so we’re not trying to let those emotions get to us just yet.”

The first set saw Scottsbluff grab a 12-7 lead on two Reed service points. Chadron came back to lead 14-13 on two points from Raylie Pourier and three ace serves from Paige Slingsby. Chadron led late 22-20. Bowlin got a kill to stop the run and then Lillian Hays served the final four points for the 25-22 win.

Game two was just as close as Chadron led 5-2 after two Sophie Watson points. Scottsbluff came back to lead 16-11 before Chadron tied the game at 17-17 on three Watson points. Chadron led 20-19 on a Avarie de Koning kill and service points. The Bearcats came back to get the win 25-22 on a Salas service point.

The third game saw Scottsbluff grab an 11-5 lead on two Finnley Martin points with two Reed kills. Scottsbluff led 16-0 and had a 22-13 lead on two Mia Bowles points. Chadron came back as de Koning had four points to cut the deficit to 22-18 and later 23-19. Reed got a kill to stop the run and then served the final point as Bowlin had the final kill.

Scottsbluff moves to 12-9 on the season and will be in Gillette on Friday. Chadron goes to 9-8 and will be at Gordon-Rushville next Tuesday.

Scottsbluff earns come-from-behind win over Gering

The Scottsbluff and Gering softball game was one where the Bearcats stayed strong despite trailing 4-1 to earn a 5-4 win over the Bulldogs Thursday night at Scottsbluff.

Scottsbluff coach Dan Fox said his team stayed cool and kept their heads in the game to pick up the thrilling victory.

“The bottom of the line-up was great and Mikala Zwetzig had two great plays at third,” Fox said. “We had a couple of errors, too. But, I think Bre pitched a heck of a game for us and so did Brodee on the opposite side. I have to give hats off to her, she pitched a great game for Gering. We will have more battles with them this year, but I thought our defense was great.”

Fox said it was a good game between the two teams. He said Gering has a little bit more varsity playing experience, but his young team found a way to get their second win this week.

“I think Gering has the more experienced players on the field for varsity players and they have a lot of girls playing like DaNae, Brodee, Rylee, and Brown. So, they have a lot of girls that played varsity last year,” he said. “We had some girls that played a little bit, but we don’t have the numbers, Loural, Campbell, and Bella played some last year. I felt they had the advantage coming with experience, but with our team, we grind and grind. We grind in practice, in summer, in the weight room. I think tonight we kept our pose and we got the win.”

Gering coach Zach Ostergard said it was a good contest between the two teams and the difference was Scottsbluff took advantage of a few fundamental miscues on defense.

“The little things that we have been talking about all season long and we let that dictate the game and we couldn’t give them any freebies or any little mistakes,” Ostergard said. “Unfortunately, we did just that and they capitalized on it. Teams like that you have to take what they give you and you can’t give them any extra outs.”

Take away a couple throwing errors, Ostergard said his defense is good. They just need to learn to not give the team extra outs.

“We take a lot of pride in our defense,” he said. “We still make some little mistakes on defense that shouldn’t have happened and that is just part of it and it is learning moments. Brodee Luce did a really great job in the circle and it was just some things late in the game that got to her and that is fine. It is something she will build off of and by the end of the year she will be a much better pitcher and we will be a lot stronger as a team.”

Both pitchers threw well. Scottsbluff sophomore Breanne Lilley picked up the win allowing seven hits, striking out three and walking just three. Gering junior pitcher Brodee Luce allowed four hits with six walks and four strikeouts.

Scottsbluff scored first as Danielle Hunter singled and scored on a throwing error for the 1-0 lead.

Gering tied the game with a run in the third Lexee Lohr walked and advanced to third on a Jacelyn Brown double. Lohr later scored on a ground out to tie the game.

The Bulldogs followed the third with three runs in the fourth, scoring all the runs with two outs. Avvah Escamilla led things off with a single and pinch runner Rileigh Dane scored on a ground out. Lohr and Hope Mitchell came through with back-to-back singles and then Brown scored both with a double for the 4-1 lead.

Scottsbluff came right back in the bottom of the fourth with a run. Clare Schlothauer ripped a 2-out double to score pinch runner Jaylee Sarchet to make it 4-2.

Neither team scored in the fifth and Scottsbluff held Gering scoreless in the top of the sixth. The bottom of the fifth was a gut-check time for Scottsbluff. With two outs, the Bearcats mounted a rally. Schlothauer started things with a 4-pitch walk. Mikala Zwetzig followed with a single to put runners in scoring position.

Schlothauer scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3. Hunter then walked. Loural McCoy got the go-ahead hit as the senior hit a slow roller that Gering couldn’t field in time and Zwetzig and Hunter both scored on a throwing error for the 5-4 lead.

Scottsbluff was led at the plate by McCoy with two hits and two RBIs. Schlothauer and Zwetzig each had doubles for the Bearcats.

Gering was led at the plate by brown with two doubles and two RNIs, while Jaleigh Bohac had a double as well.

Both teams will be back in action Tuesday when Gering hosts Chase County and Scottsbluff hosts Chadron.

CASPER, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team finished with eight aces as the Cougars swept Casper College 25-15, 25-17, 25-13 on Tuesday in Casper, Wyoming.

The No. 18 WNCC Cougars move to 21-7 on the season after the non-conference contest. The Cougars will be back in action this weekend on the road when they face Otero College on Friday and Trinidad State College on Saturday in South sub-region contests.

Tuesday’s win was one where the Cougars used strong serving to open up a tight match in all three sets.

The first set saw Casper holding a 6-5 lead before a Finja Schul kill and then three Lilly Zwart kills for a 9-6 lead. Casper knotted the score at 9-9 and it was 17-15 late. That was when WNCC got a block and Taylor Tyser served seven straight points for the 25-15 win that saw the Cougar libero get two ace serves.

The second set was just as close early as Casper led 2-1 and had the game tied three times early. WNCC went up 13-8 on three Nora Marginean points. Tyser pushed the Cougar lead to 19-11 after three points including a monster kill from Zwart. Marginean finished off the second with two service points and the 25-17 win.

The third set saw Casper lead by single points four occasions, the last time at 10-9. That was when WNCC called a timeout and Tamika Eastman hammered a kill after the timeout to get the service back to the Cougars. Marginean then serviced three points for a 13-10 lead and Tyser had four points for a 19-12 lead.

After a sideout by Casper, Ahleejah Tovo-Sunia got a kill and then Zwart went to town behind the service line with five points, including the match-ending setter dump by Marginean for the win.

Tyser and Marginean each had double-doubles in the win. Marginean had 13 points with 30 set assists while Tyser had 14 points with 16 digs.

WNCC tallied 33 kills overall while hitting .256. Finja Schul had 10 kills on a .818 hitting with five blocks, and an ace serve.

Tovo-Sunia and Zwart followed with seven kills each. Zwart also had 11 points with five blocks, while Tovo-Sunia had eight digs.

WNCC volleyball falls to NJC

WNCC volleyball falls to NJC

STERLING, Colo. – The 17th-ranked Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team suffered their first South conference setback Wednesday evening as the No. 4 Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen topped the Cougars 25-17, 25-12, 25-16.

The Cougars drop to 20-7 on the season and go to 4-1 in the South conference, while NJC moves to 20-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

WNCC will next be in action Tuesday, October 15 when they travel to Casper College and then a conference showdown with Otero College on October 18.

Wednesday’s contest started well for the Cougars as both teams were trading blows back and forth. WNCC trailed 9-8 in the first when NJC’s Kaitlyn Barnes served three straight for a 13-9 lead and then Anna Ruter had two points for a 16-9 lead.

WNCC came back as Lilly Zwart served up three points to make it 16-13. WNCC trailed 21-16 on a Tamika Eastman kill, but the Plainswomen took the first set 25-17.

NJC started the second set at 3-0 before WNCC cut the lead deficit to one, 6-5, on a Finah Schul kill. WNCC trailed 11-8 on an Eastman block. That was when the NJC service took over as Barnes served four points for a 16-8 lead and the Plainswomen captured the second set 25-12.

The third set was close at the start with WNCC trailing 2-1. That was when Barnes took over with nine straight points to put NJC up 12-1. WNCC tried coming back, with two straight services points from Taylor Tyser and Zwart to trail 18-9, but it was a little too late as NJC won the third 25-16.

WNCC finished the match with just 22 kills and 44 digs. Tyser, who was named the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week Wednesday morning, finished with 11 digs and two service points. Eastman, who was the Region IX South Offensive Player of the Week this week, had 10 digs with five kills.

WNCC was led on the offensive side by Schul and Zwart each with seven kills while Chloe Grady had two kills. Schul and Zwart each had four digs, while Ahleejah Tovo-Sunia had eight digs. Nora Marginean had 22 set assists with four digs.

Zwart led the way at the service line with six points with Tovo-Sunia and Eastman each getting two points.

NJC was led on the offensive side by 6-foot-6 Samantha Mosley with 10 kills.
